Fawakih’s Tajwid program is designed to equip students of all Arabic reading levels with an understanding of the basic rules of Tajwid. Students will be given the opportunity to implement the rules learned by practicing reading with teachers and teacher’s helpers through approx. 26 hours of Tajwid training and practical implementation.
Students are required to have prior ability of reading Qur’an. This program aims to teach students rules of Tajwid, which can only be practiced when one already knows how to read; that is, one must know the pronunciation of diacritical marks and have the ability to connect words together as necessary. Fast reading is NOT a requirement; one must simply be able to read without excessive prompting and correction, even if slowly.
The primary purpose of the Tajwid program is not only to help you learn to read the Quran correctly, but for you to eventually become an active teacher of the Quran. We realize everyone will not become a professional Tajwid teacher – that is okay! However, it doesn’t require a professional with multiple ijazas to help teach a beginner how to string letters into words in the Quran. After completing the program, you will be encouraged to help someone else. Zakat (or charity) is one of the five pillars of Islam; think of teaching Qur’an or Tajwid as paying zakat on the knowledge Allah (SWT) has given you. Not only will you help spread this learning revolution to others, you will also be following the hadith:
The best of you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it.
The core tajwid textbook utilized at the Fawakih programs is “The Science of Tajwid” by Al-Hajjah Hayat Ali Al Hussaini. The book has been translated to English by Sr. Zaynab Salman and Sr. Reem Osman. The book covers all the essential rules of tajwid in a concise manner and includes diagrams, charts, and pertinent examples to illustrate the usage of rules. The book has been used extensively at the Fawakih programs, helping hundreds of students learn the rules of Tajwid. The book has been reviewed and approved by Shaykh Muhiuddin Kurdi (Raheemahu Allah), a leading tajwid authority of our time. He was a well-known and reputable faqīh and a teacher of qira'āt , heading the Qurrā' at Jāmi` Zayd ibn Thābit in Damascus.
