Yaqub Mikus

Resident Quranic Arabic and Islamic Studies Instructor

Yaqub Abdurrahman Mikus was raised in Michigan and embraced Islam by the mercy and grace of Allah at the age of 19. His desire to learn about Islam led him to study at the Dar al-'Ulum al-'Arabiyyah al-Islamiyyah institute in South Africa. There, he completed the six-year 'alim course under the guidance of Shaykh Taha Kara an (the Dar al-'Ulum's principal) and the other much respected teachers. Shaykh Taha Karaan is a Shafi'i scholar born in Cape Town, South Africa to a family renowned in both its maternal and paternal lineage for Islamic scholarship. His father, Shaykh Yusuf Karaan, is one of the oldest and most distinguished Islamic scholars in the Cape. Shaykh Yusuf – famous for his translation of many of Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya al-Kandhlawi's seminal works – currently sits as the chief Magistrate for Islamic Civil Matters in the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC).

Upon graduating, he participated in further studies and research, while also spending time on the research and writing of fatawa. Shaykh Yaqub taught at the institute and his specialty was Shafi'ee Fiqh and Usool al-Hadith. Thereafter, he traveled to Egypt where he remained occupied with research and teaching. Ustadh Yaqub is an online instructor at Dar al-Hadith and Cordoba Academy. He very much enjoys the discourses of classical Islamic scholarship and is an avid classical text researcher. He joined Fawakih as Resident Instructor of Arabic & Islamic Studies in 2012.
